November 4, 2016 to November 6, 2016 – Advanced Skills for Practical Assistance and Manipulations with William Hufschmidt – In this course, we will learn how to effectively use words, presence, and practical aids to help our students learn and hopefully repeat the result of support. It is based on the main categories of practical aids to yoga and human anatomy and invites us to further develop their effectiveness with our eyes and hands. We have had ample opportunity to give and receive different types of help, and we have learned to develop listening and speaking skills that communicate the intention of the aid in an effective and cost-effective manner. We practiced the use of soft pressure points and stabilizations to avoid the crude manipulations that some teachers use. In one exercise, we practiced uniting our breath with a partner`s breath, which for some was an emotionally emanating experience from us. Time constraints did not allow us to go through all the postures in the manual, but the ones we studied were Tadasana (mountain), Ardhachandrasana (crescent), Bhujangasana (cobra), Garbasana, Sukhasana, Garudasana (eagle), Parsvakonasa (triangle), Down Dog, Phalakasana (board) and Kapotasana (dove). November 30, 2018 to December 2, 2018 – Asanas for Training 1 with Krissy Dopson – The training yoga class, as practiced in the Pranakriya tradition, is an advanced course for experienced students who have the awareness to protect themselves in case of injury. It is an energy class designed to build energy from one posture to another, while increasing the body`s ability to retain energy and the mind`s ability to procreate. The teacher usually plays the role of a trainer.

We focused on eleven postures: balancing crescent, curved legged tree, raven, eagle, head posture, lateral inclined plane, skygazer, straight leg stretching, toe position and upward-facing dog. Krissy asked me to do a demonstration of Bent-Leg Tree because I had experience with Short Man Pose. Optional class activities included special classes that anyone staying in Kripalu can participate in, including Kirtan chanting, Yoga Nidra sleep, Kripalu Yoga dance, gentle yoga, tarot card reading, and more.

There are also two or three 4:15pm yoga classes offered every day of the week that I wanted to take, but my program sessions ended 15 minutes after the yoga classes, so it would have been disrespectful to go to a late class. For a foodie, I have to admit that the food in Kripalu is amazing. It`s quite a feat to present so many different flavors in each buffet. Examples include sesame cider glazed chicken with creamy jasmine rice and chicken cake for lunch, and cacciatore chicken and shrimp with butternut squash and spicy coriander pesto for dinner. The homemade soups are delicious and there is a sandwich shop with homemade bread, an Indian/Asian bar and special options for all sorts of dietary restrictions. Chicken and fish dishes usually have a vegetarian equivalent and the menu changes daily. There is also a bookshop connected to the café. You could actually have your meal in the dining room, go to the café and eat there. The bookstore sells all kinds of yoga books, audio recordings, yoga equipment, jewelry, clothing and kripalu products. You could literally spend a small fortune on it. I completed the 300-hour Pranakriya Teacher Training, an advanced yoga teacher training that earned me the RYT-500 designation.

Training can take place over a period of several years to give workers time to complete the curriculum. April 17, 2020 to April 19, 2020 – Yoga for Kids: The Teenager in Adolescence with Emily Gretz – This 20-hour training module teaches adult students how to combine postures, games, pictures and singing to teach children aged 9 to 12 and adolescents asanas to breathing, balance, flexibility, strength and concentration. Yogis, parents, and teachers learn skills to promote a connection with body, mind, and spirit through yoga. While each Pranakriya class is amazing, this one included many opportunities to exercise our creativity and find ways to get kids interested in yoga. The internship gave us the opportunity to create our own class, which includes all the techniques we learned in the course. Prana Kriya Yoga is a powerful practice that harmonizes the body`s physical movement flow (kriya) with its energetic potential (prana) and makes you more aware of your spiritual nature.
